Interactions

A. Top Drug-Drug Interactions:

1.Nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate): Cialis and nitrates both lower blood pressure. Taking them together can cause a significant and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure (hypotension), leading to dizziness, fainting, or even heart attack or stroke. It is contraindicated to use Cialis with nitrates or recreational "poppers" (amyl nitrites).

2.Alpha-blockers (e.g., prazosin, terazosin, tamsulosin): Both Cialis and alpha-blockers relax blood vessels, which can lead to excessive blood pressure reduction when used together. This may result in dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing). If needed, your doctor may adjust the dosage or recommend spacing the medications.

3.Other antihypertensive drugs (e.g., atenolol, propranolol, enalapril, lisinopril): Cialis can enhance the blood-pressure-lowering effects of these medications. While this interaction is usually less severe than with nitrates or alpha-blockers, it can still cause dizziness or fainting in sensitive individuals. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.

Other Drug-Drug interactions:

  • Ketoconazole, itraconazole (used to manage fungal infection)
  • Protease inhibitors (used to manage HIV infection) Ex. ritonavir, lopinavir
  • Phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine (medicines used for fits)
  • Rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin (medicines used for bacterial infections)
  • Other medicines used to improve blood flow to the penis (Ex. sildenafil)

B. Drug-Food Interactions:

Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food interactions to be aware of:

  1. Grapefruit and Grapefruit Juice: Grapefruit can increase the levels of tadalafil in your blood by interfering with its metabolism. This may amplify side effects, such as headaches, dizziness, or low blood pressure. Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cialis.
  2. Alcohol: Drinking alcohol with Cialis can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effects of the medication, leading to symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. Limiting alcohol intake is recommended while using Cialis.
  3. High-Fat Meals: While Cialis can be taken with or without food, consuming it with a high-fat meal may delay its onset of action. Opt for lighter meals if rapid effectiveness is needed.
  4. Caffeine: Though not a direct interaction, combining Cialis with high caffeine intake might worsen side effects like headaches or increase heart rate in sensitive individuals.
RicanMix () is a combination of two medications:

Cialis (tadalafil) is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It may also be used in patients with, or without, severe heart failure.

C.

Cialis (tadalafil) can interact with certain foods and beverages, possibly altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of side effects. Here are the key drug-food Interactions:

  1. : Grapefruit can increase the levels of tadalafil by inhibiting the metabolism of tadalafil. This increases the blood pressure-lowering effects of the medication.
  2. : Though this combination may not significantly affect the effectiveness of Cialis, regular consumption of both medications may improve their effectiveness.
  3. : While they may improve blood pressure-lowering effects, the effects can still be excessive in sensitive individuals.

By Sophie Kang, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University

For many young adults, the decision to take a pill or get one filled is a learning experience foriatrics. In fact, in the last five years,GPs have found that young adults who take Cialis, a prescription drug similar to Viagra, can be surprisingly successful at maintaining a healthy erection.

But Kang, a pharmacy student, says it’s also important to know that, even if you take the pill, your erection may not last as long as you hoped. And that’s precisely what happened to Kang, who was admitted to an emergency room after experiencing headaches and visual disturbances while taking Cialis.

GPs say that the headaches, and other side effects, that can develop when young adults take Cialis, including nausea, dizziness, and light-headedness. They say that even with regular use of Cialis, the headaches may not subside. The headaches have to do with a person’s ability to get and maintain an erection that’s strong enough for sex.

What to expect

GPs say that young adults who take Cialis, in addition to taking the pill, will need to be sexually aroused to be successful. You might not be able to get aroused when you’re taking the pill.

How to get the drug

GPs are happy to prescribe Cialis to any young adult. But it’s especially important for those who don’t want their prescription filled. Young adults can have serious side effects from taking a drug, and it’s important to be aware of these risks so that they can seek help before they begin to take the drug. That way, young adults can get the right dose of Cialis, whether or not they take it themselves.

GPs are also happy to prescribe an erectile dysfunction drug if a young adult is diagnosed with one or more of the following conditions:

  • Low sperm count
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • High or low levels of calcium in the blood
  • Taking other medications that may cause a drop in blood pressure

The side effects of Cialis are similar to those of Viagra, but Kang has the potential to have more severe side effects if she takes the drug. Kang can have vision changes, a hearing loss, and a severe allergic reaction to certain medications.

Young adults shouldn’t take Cialis if they also take Viagra or other similar medications, or if they also have other conditions that can make it difficult to get an erection.
